On 27-11-’18 the Belgian and Dutch tunnel associations have had their international congress “Beyond a tunnel vision” on tunnel renovation.
More than 350 participants from all over Europe had travelled to Brussels to hear about the tunnel renovation challenges in specific countries and on a European level. It was an inspiring and informative day, where sharing knowledge and the importance of European cooperation was emphasized by the keynote speakers, amongst others the minister of infrastructure of Brussels Pascal Smet and ITA Vice President Eric Leca.
The conference attracted people from civil, mechanical, electrical, tunnel operational background attending the sub sessions like asset management, smart solutions, digitalization and many more. In the sub session on case studies, experiences have been shared on the challenges that need to be faced in renovation projects. The conference has made a contribution to ask for priority on tunnel renovation. To maintain the quality of our inner cities, the aged underground infrastructure needs attention. Failing tunnel structures disrupt cities and could cause that society loses confidence in subsurface solutions The conference has also shown that tunnel renovations are interesting and a challenging field of work.
