On 13 September 2019, in the Sheraton Hotel in Warsaw, a seminar entitled "Challenges of modern tunnelling" took place. The event was organized by the PKG Underground Construction Subcommittee together with ITA-AITES and the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology.
The seminar participants were welcomed by Robert Soszyński, Deputy Mayor of Warsaw, Dr. Monika Mitew-Czajewska (Warsaw University of Technology) and Jinxiu Yan - President of ITA-AITES.
The seminar presented very important aspects of tunnelling in the world. Jinxiu Yan has told about the development of tunneling technology in China over the past 40 years. In her speech she emphasized that the construction of tunnels changes people’s lives for the better. The speech, prepared by Martin Herrenknecht and Dmitri Petrov-Ganev, concerned on innovations and challenges in mechanized tunnelling. Martin Knights presented current trends and influences in British tunnel projects. Tarcisio B. Celestino, former president of ITA-AITES, talk about needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprints) in underground construction, as well as through underground construction. Barbara Michalska, First Deputy Mayor of Świnoujście, spoke about the Polish project, i.e. the tunnel under the Świnoujście Strait, and specifically about the project challenges related to the implementation of the investment.
