More than 550 abstracts have been submitted for WTC2014

19 August 2013

Abstract submissions for the World Tunnel Congress 2014 have exceeded the expectations of the Scientific Committee. A total of 553 abstracts have been submitted to the Congress. The main themes chosen by the authors were “Planning and Design of Underground Structures”, “Tunnel Operation, Safety, Maintenance, Rehabilitation, Renovation and Repair” and “Learning from Case Histories”. The continent which made more contributions was Europe, with 219 abstracts, followed by South America, with 144. Asia was the third sending 132 abstracts. North America has submitted 35 abstracts, Oceania, 17 and Africa, six. “The interest from all continents shows that the technical community from all over the world recognises the importance of Brazil and of WTC”, says Arsenio Negro, chairman of WTC2014 Scientific Committee. “I am glad we have received a substantial number of abstracts and I am sure this shall reflect in a successful Congress”.

The WTC2014 will take place in Iguassu Falls, Brazil, between May 9th and 15th, 2014. Brazil and its South American neighbours currently offer several business and technical exchange opportunities. Some of the on-going projects in the region are unique from a global perspective by virtue of characteristics and the challenges they represent to the technical community. An example is the tunnel under the Andes, between Argentina and Chile.

The Congress will bring together public managers, designers, constructors, equipment suppliers, engineering service companies, professors, professionals and students from all over the world. There will be space and opportunity for the interchange of technical information, for showcasing new products and services and for creating or strengthening relations among the participants.
