TDUK: Think Deep UK
As urbanisation in the UK increases and pressure grows on our cities to become more resilient and sustainable, it is more important than ever to begin a cross disciplinary conversation on how the use of underground space can help to cope with the evident challenges. Three-dimensional urban planning procedures are needed to enable the sustainable growth of our cities, both above and below ground. Petr Salak from Dr. Sauer & Partners suggested creation of the‘Think Deep UK’, based on the excellent work initiated and advanced by ITACUS worldwide. The inauguration meeting took place in September 2015 in London. Currently the association has members including architects, economists, geologists, geotechnical and legal experts, tunnellers, urban planners, urban designers, and other disciplines.
The aims of TDUK:
- Promote the efficient use of underground space and the value it can generate
- Create a three-dimensional spatial planning strategy
- Develop guidance and best practice
- Bring together interested groups with a singular campaign voice
- Organise multidisciplinary workshops, lectures and site visits
- Stop the ‘first come, first served’ approach to depleting underground resources
