Expanding the underground exploration in India

Expanding the underground exploration in India

13 August 2022

ITACUS has been exploring various partnerships across India to expand the exploration and understanding of underground development for a sustainable and climate-resilient future. Aligned with the nation’s priority on improving regional connectivity, hundreds of kilometres of tunnels are being constructed or inaugurated. To highlight the value of underground spaces beyond tunnelling projects and parking infrastructure and service lines, ITACUS collaborated with the National Institute of Urban Affairs on July 12, 2022, for a brown bag session. ITACUS Co-Chairs — Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro — and Activity Group Lead Mahak Agrawal shared possible pathways India can explore for underground urbanism.

ITACUS is also collaborating with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India to build knowledge on the value of underground spaces for a resilient and liveable future. A team of ITACUS — led by Mahak Agrawal, Antonia Cornaro, Han Admiraal, Chrysothemis Paraskevopoulou, and Marilu Melo Zurita — is developing a thematic paper with the Ministry’s National Institute on Disaster Management on July 12, 2022, for a brown bag session. ITACUS Co-Chairs — Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro — and Activity Group Lead Mahak Agrawal shared possible pathways India can explore for underground urbanism.
