ITACUS: New Year's wishes 2023 and recap of highlights 2022

05 January 2023

ITA-AITES Committee on Underground Spaces (ITACUS) is excited to roll into the new year with recharged batteries - after some quality time this festive season with loved ones and several wins!

In life, at and beyond work, there are a lot of ups and downs, so you got to celebrate the ups when they come.

A few wins of 2022 that ITACUS, the ITA Committee on Underground Space is grateful for:

Partnering with We Don't Have Time to advocate for using underground spaces for a better world.

Strengthening and expanding the scope of ITACUS'engagements with long-time partners ISOCARP - International Society of City and Regional Planners.

New engagements in India, particularly with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the Government of India's National Institute of Disaster Management, a technical arm of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Led by Mahak Agrawal, and co-authored by Han Admiraal, Antonia Cornaro, Chrysothemis Paraskevopoulou and Marilu Melo Zurita, ITACUS published a thematic paper with the Government of India highlighting the role of the underground spaces for a sustainable and climate-resilient future of India.

Continued collaboration with UN Environment Programme (UNEP) for the Green Growth Knowledge Platform and Sustainable Infrastructure Partnership. A study led by Mahak Agrawal, Antonia Cornaro and Han Admiraal on underground data centres in Helsinki, Finland is published by UNEP in its flagship compendium of best practices for sustainable infrastructure.

Continued collaboration with the Mission Earth First, as the founding member of the Mission dedicated towards the creation of self-sustaining communities and cities. An upcoming World Systemic Forum will take place with the active participation of ITACUS in January 2023 at the Hagerbach Test Gallery, Switzerland.

Our Young Professional Think Deep Programme (YPTDP) led by Petr Salak and Rosanne Verloop is going strong this coming year with some anticipated YPTDPs in Athens and Gdansk, as well as in Hong Kong, amongst other interested places.

Driving policy development in Underground Space on a national level is done by our National Action Think Deep Programme (NATDP) under the renewed lead of Abidemi Agwor. The programme is looking forward to reinforcing ties with Think Deep Naija, Think Deep Oz and Think Deep UK.

Our Scientific Ambassador Youssef Diab and Global Young Member Ambassador Mauricio Alvarez are continuously committed to reaching out to the world beyond our reach and beneath our feet.

We are excited and looking forward to strengthening our ties with our existing and forming new ties with future collaborators.

We are grateful for our online and offline community that believes in the world beneath our feet and is an inspiring positive change for a sustainable and climate-resilient future.

We hope and wish that the new year will be thriving for you, too. Be it with work or personal life.
