The greater Cairo metroline no.3 is 30.5 km length of which nearly 28.5 km are underground together with 29 stations.

The route extends from Cairo airport east end to Imbaba west end. Additional branch to Mohandeseen of 3 km, is to be add which shall be also constructed in underground. 

The line crosses the River Nile twice. The planned capacity of this line when completed is 2.1 million passengers / day. The works on the Cairo metro line 3 phase 1 has started in July 2007. This phase includes 4.5 km in deep tunnelling & 5 underground stations, and opened for operation in February 2012.

Also phase 2 had started construction on July 2009 parallel with phase1, it includes 6.5 km. &4 underground stations, and it is completed and operated on May 2014.

Phases 3 which includes:3A & 3B & 3C of this line no. 3are under preparation, it is planned to start construction on June 2015.

Phase 4which includes 4a & 4b are under preparation, it is planned to start construction within 2015.

Line 4, phase 1visibility study has been completed, tendering will be finished mind of 2015, execution foreseen to be beginning of 2016. The study area is defined by: phase 1 of the proposed Metro line 4, running from the depot/workshop via the grand Egyptian museum to el Malek el Saleh station with a length about 16 km, and phase 2 route between El Malek El Saleh via Sawwah square and direct to ring road exit 18.

There is a plan proposed 6 lines of metrolines to be constructed till year 2022. Three further metro lines are recommended in this study in addition to the already existing 3 lines 1 & 2 under operation, and line 3 partially operated.

Planned are 6 tunnels under the Suez Canal 3 at Ismailia zone and 3 at Portsaed zone, in each 2 zone 2 are for cars & one for railway. Preparatory works are underway.
